Controlled environments for precision manufacturing and electronics

Temperature, humidity and particle control for assembly and process areas, plus the ventilation and equipment cooling that keep a production floor stable.

Governed by

ISO 14644-1 · ASHRAE · ISHRAE

The problem

What has to be controlled, and what usually goes wrong

Every one of these is a design decision rather than a commissioning adjustment, which is why they are settled before anything is ordered.

  • 01

    Stability, not just setpoint

Precision assembly is usually sensitive to the swing rather than the average. A system that holds a setpoint on design day and drifts three degrees across a shift is a system that produces variable output.

  • 02

    Particle control without full classification

Many manufacturing areas need controlled particulate levels without carrying a full GMP cleanroom. Filtration coverage, air-change rate and entry arrangement are sized to the actual requirement rather than to the nearest ISO class.

  • 03

    Process heat and equipment cooling

Process equipment can dominate the load and does not follow occupancy. It is calculated separately and often served separately, so that the comfort system is not sized around a machine.

  • 04

    Electrostatic and humidity requirements

Electronics assembly usually carries a lower humidity bound for corrosion and an upper one for ESD. Both are a mechanical requirement, and both need measuring at the bench rather than at the return.

Spaces

What we are asked to build

  • Clean assembly and sub-assembly areas
  • Electronics and PCB manufacturing
  • Temperature and humidity controlled process rooms
  • Metrology and inspection rooms
  • Equipment and process cooling
  • General plant ventilation and exhaust

Standards

What governs the work here

ISO 14644-1
Cleanroom classification by airborne particle count
ASHRAE
Design and installation practice for heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
ISHRAE
